Roman Holiday Bathhouse Review

INTRODUCTION:

If two heads are better than one, then logic follows that two gay bathhouses are also better than one. Roman Holiday has been a Los Angeles gay bathhouse staple for over fifty years. The fact that they've been operating two locations for so long is proof that they definitely know how to keep a steady client base all this time. Even when you venture there now, you can see how they were able to introduce so many extra (and extra fun) amenities that have become standard across the city.

When I moved to the San Fernando Valley recently and found that they had a place up here, too, it really took the edge of having to change neighbourhoods. It's still clean and properly maintained like all these years ago, and the whole experience has a whiff of nostalgia to it, even when there's guys from all ages in the hot tub. And as far as fun goes, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

ABOUT:

When you first walk into either Roman Holiday location - there's one on Venice Blvd, just ten minutes from the beach, and another in Van Nuys in the Valley, just off of I-405 - you'll notice how familiar it feels. This is because it's kind of become the model for all other bathhouses in the city (and really, everywhere else). Opening in 1968, Roman Holiday was one of the first bathhouses to offer more than just a sauna and some tiny rooms. Here, they added features that could be taken from actual resorts: A sun deck, a large pool room with a hot tub, and a great lounge area (and while it sounds kind of boring here, having a vending machine with snacks and drinks is a godsend at two in the morning).

On the first floor are all the rooms, as well as the pool areas, and it's easy to go from there to the sundeck, which quickly became the first place I hit every time I attended. And that's easy to do, because it's open twenty four hours a day, only being closed on a couple big holidays. Everything is a lot simpler and easier to deal with here than at other places, in part because you don't have to become a member to attend. Just pay the locker and rooms fees (if available) when you arrive, and you're good.

CONCLUSION:

Easily one of the best time I've ever had in a bathhouse was one of my earliest experiences in one, and that was at Roman Holiday. Now I still go there from time to time - in part because it's also really affordable - and not just because of nostalgia, but because I can still meet a really hot guy really fast and have a really good time, which is the whole point of going to these things in first place. I'm glad that this place has set the standard in terms of adding services on like a sundeck and a lounge area, but I know that's just meant to be icing on the cake

But because these features draw people in, it means there's always new people coming in and checking it out. Roman Holiday has been able to guarantee an amazing time for decades now, and while it's a bit old fashioned, you'll always see new faces and have new experiences. Especially in Los Angeles it's hard to stay on top for a long time, but this place has been able to succeed at two locations across the city.

Pros
  • I've had a lot of really great experiences at Roman Holiday, and I think a lot of that is due to its reputation over the years as one of the most consistently dependable bathhouses in the city. Even if it's not the closest one to you, you still hear about it at clubs or even online, and take a trip out to see what all the fuss was about. But as soon as you take the tour of the whole place - from the sundeck outside to catch some rays to murals in the pool room - you'll see just how many great amenities this place still offers. You could only imagine how amazing it would have been to come here in the 1970s, when it would have felt like a resort.

A whiff of nostalgia and kitsch can always be a little bit fun, and the decor knows it kind of over the top and ridiculous, but it's those little things that gives the place a bit more character than other bathhouses, which can feel pretty sterile. It's actually given me a bit of an icebreaker topic when I'm trying to chat up someone in jacuzzi.

Usually if a bathhouse is running more than one location, the other is in a completely different city. But Roman Holiday has been so successful over the last fifty years, that adding another one in Los Angeles worked perfectly. And you know that means it's really popular, and that you can always expect a great selection of guys on a Friday or Saturday. One thing that sets it apart from its peers in a really appreciative way is how there is no membership required, that you simply pay for the services you want when you arrive. It feels a lot more freeing, where you don't have to make a commitment like it's joining a gym.

Cons
  • Being practically a legend in the city gay scene doesn't mean you're without some problems. Almost everything about Roman Holiday is a bit old, and while for a lot of people that might not be an issue, there is definitely members of the community that would avoid it simply because it's not new. It's been around since 1968, a lot of its customers are in their fifties, and while the design isn't fifty years old, it doesn't feel very modern. It's still popular, and you'll definitely get some of the action you came here for, but there's definitely the feeling that most of the younger crowd just tries it out for a bit before finding another bathhouse.

Like places old and new, Roman Holiday always has the typical busy-ness issues, where it's rather quiet on a Tuesday and Wednesday (hence the low prices), and sometimes there's line up on a Friday or Saturday evening, and all the rooms have already been rented out. Even with two locations there can be crowds on weekends, and while that's good in some ways, it can also feel a bit like a regular club, where after meeting someone you actually have to leave to yours or their place for some action.

Some people I talked to said that the staff could be really dismissive and rude, but I didn't find any problems with them, as long as you gave a couple dollars as a tip up front (some people find having to do that frustrating, but I think of this just like service industry).
