Jacques' Cabaret Boston Sex Club Review

INTRODUCTION:

The drag show and the sex show have had a strange relationship over the years, with not much crossover. The first is a lot more lighthearted and fun, and the second is a sex show. It's very helpful to know what you're getting into when you pay for your ticket, so it's important to be clear here and say that Jacques' Cabaret clearly falls into the first category, where you'll see a show of singing and dancing and comedy (with some dirty moments sprinkled in), all put on by men dressed as women. And now that you're properly informed, you're ready to have a wonderful time.

ABOUT:

You'll find Jacques' Cabaret perfectly located in downtown Boston, close to the Leather District (no joke). Its rather discreet exterior does a great job at hiding the hilarious and over-the-top shows inside, which run seven days a week, with two per day on the weekends. And while there are several different shows with several different performer lineups, the core components are the same. Singing (sometimes lip-syncing), dancing, a bit of mock-stripping, and a whole lot of cheeky comedy by the MCs. If the audience roast has died down over the years, these performers are single-handedly reviving it, but they do a great job at not getting too mean or nasty.

Even when audience members might be brought up on stage, it's clearly more in good fun than anything else. And you'll notice that when this happens, most of the people coming up onstage are soon-to-be brides, since the key market for Jacques' Cabaret seems to be bridal parties. Which is great for business, because they certain spend a lot of money. Reservations have to sometimes be made weeks in advances for weekend shows, and if you try to show up without one, you might be forced to sit or stand in the back. On the other hand, it can be a lot quieter on a Monday or Tuesday, but the professionalism of the performers means they'll always be putting on a good show.

-be ready to tip the performers as they come through the audience, otherwise you'll find yourself at the end of a (friendly) tongue-lashing

CONCLUSION:

While it might not be the sexiest spot in town, Jacques' Cabaret is certainly one of the best places in Boston to have a lot of risqué fun, in the grand old fashioned sense. There's not many places where you can mix singing, dancing and comedy all in one show (plus the cherry on top of all the performers being men who convincingly dress up as women).

Being open seven days a week with multiple shows on some days demonstrates how much of an audience there is for performances like this, and it's really important to acknowledge the courage of the performers to embrace who they are. There is an inspiration throughout these shows behind all the sexy jokes and routines, and that's just another reason to support Jacques' Cabaret if you are a fan of every and any sort of adult entertainment.

Pros
  • Finally, an actual sexy revue show with people that can talk! Even if they're dressed in drag, their personalities shine brightly through, and that's more than can be said with any stripper, male or female, no matter how good they are on a pole or at sexy break-dancing. When was the last time you heard a performer speak onstage at an adult club, and actually get an intentional laugh? Jacques' Cabaret follows a wonderful tradition that seems to have faded out over the years, but is now making a bit more of a comeback thanks to television shows like Ru-Paul's Drag Race.

It was great to see that the place was packed, although it's not that hard to do considering how small and cozy the place is. Fortunately that's a huge plus for the show, because it means it's very easy for the MCs and performers to come offstage and mingle with and lightly mock the audience members. It's a wonderful combination of fashion, music, comedy and dance, with just enough dirtiness sprinkled in. Each performer had their own style, and it's clear that there was genuine love of being onstage, which could be seen through their dedication and professionalism towards their roles.

The entire place is very well run, and the website does a great job at giving an overview of the shows that are offered, and make it easy to reserve seating ahead of time, which is key. $10 to $15 for the show is comparable price to any other evening entertainment in the city, and the drinks are quite affordable, since they start at $5 for beers or mixed drinks.

Cons
  • It's night with some risqué entertainment to be sure, but it's more flirty and fun than anything to do with the actual f-word. If you're coming here for any sort of stripping, it's going to be more amusing than arousing, and (for obvious reasons) not go very far. On top of that, it is a show first and foremost, and a gay bar…not really at all. It seemed like everyone there was part of a bridal party, so it's definitely not the sort of place to meet any fun and adventurous men. So for people who are coming here for sex…you will almost certainly be disappointed unless you really try to chat up that bridal party, or wait around for one of the performers on the off-chance that they'll want to grab a drink at their own bar after the show.

The shows themselves can be a bit corny, but a lot of that is overcome with the enthusiasm and novelty of each act. In terms of actual singing skills, there's a lot of lip-syncing, but fortunately the cure for that is coming on karaoke Tuesdays.

The place is quite small, and seating can fill up fast, so sometimes you have to make reservations months in advance. While they do allow people to come in without table or seating reservations, some of these areas do not have a perfect view of the stage, and can become obstructed at certain points of the show when people begin to stand up. Another problem with this non-reserved area is that is around the back section of the main room, and sometimes you can hear the other show downstairs quite well, so it's a bit of confusing mix of sounds.
