Bar Sinister Los Angeles Sex Club Review

INTRODUCTION:

Realizing that you're into BDSM isn't so difficult if you've already surrounded yourself in a lifestyle that involves leather, goth music and open relationships. Not to say that all of these things always go together, but it really did feel like a natural extension for me, and it didn't take long before I found a pretty big community both on and offline where I could really be myself. The entire sub-culture is a really intense one. Think the Matrix, but with sex replacing all the guns.

Los Angeles is big enough to fit places that really feel like they could be a sex club, but aren't. It's the city of movies, where they work very hard to make things appear to be authentic, but are just a bunch of sets and actors. Meanwhile, when those in the city want to let loose and have a really fun time, they'll go to a club that really feels like it's only one drink and one kiss away from turning into a massive orgy on the dance floor, but then pulls back at the last minute. Short of going to an actual sex club, Bar Sinister is your best bet for feeling like you just walked into one, especially one with a lot of gothic-BDSM overtones.

ABOUT:

Not to burst everyone's bubble, but Bar Sinister is mostly just a bar. A great bar, an amazing nightclub, a prime concert venue, and more or less the headquarters of LA goth culture on a Saturday night, but it is still just a bar. They do enjoy getting awfully close to being something a little bit dirtier, though. First is the dress code, which strongly encourages leather, tight, and black (and if not this, then showing plenty of tatted-up skin). The music is a mad pulsating grind, and the drinks are strong. They have almost-topless dancers (pasties or duct tape over the nipples, sometimes done very artistically), and a lot of the art throughout the place has a certain erotic bent to it.

The goth and metal bands that play are not exactly an afterthought, but it's the loyal fanbase that gives Bar Sinister its power. They come for birthdays and special events, and know the staff very well. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, and with these events occurring only on Saturday nights, that means everyone is waiting the whole week for a chance to show up and be their best.

So the whole thing really just feels like a goth club, but then you take a trip to Purgatory. Which is a space up on the second floor, and the atmosphere changes a bit, because here you'll find a live BDSM show going on, typically with someone strapped to the massive steel and leather cross. And it is certainly a show, as you have to contact the Purgatory Masters ahead of time to be considered for a scene (no one is simply plucked out of the audience). Even the rules of Purgatory are very similar to BDSM dungeons (never interrupt a scene, don't heckle, you must ask for consent, be respectful, dress appropriately, which means fetish gear), but even though it can run all night, there is still no permitted sex anywhere on the premise.

CONCLUSION:

Bar Sinister feels like the place where a slight change in ownership could turn it from nightclub to sex club over one weekend. It definitely has that great atmosphere of sex and possibility, along with a beautiful crowd who definitely like to show themselves off, where you can meet the sort of person who would really be interested in the same crazy kinks as you. But it's still a place where you can only watch the scenes in the Purgatory, you can't really participate. There are bands who come in from across the country and the world to put on a show, and after them it's DJs pumping out some of the best goth-industrial beats.

There's a great time to be had, and you can find some eager strangers who might love to come home with you and have all sorts of fun with you and your partner until the sun comes up, but Bar Sinister is not a sex club. It's the next best thing, though, and if you're in LA and feeling…darker than usual…this is a great place to party all night.

Pros
  • The best thing about Bar Sinister is that it's a bit more bar than sinister, and that probably works out for the best. It's a great place to meet old friends, make new friends, dance like crazy, and get a bit toasted because the drinks are relatively cheap (especially for LA on a Saturday). Sex is practically dripping from the ceiling, all the more so because there is no direct release. Everyone is full of crazy energy here, even the most decked-out goths who don't seem to every want to move or smile.

The Purgatory up on the second floor is a very impressive set up for a nightclub. You can really tell that the people who set it up and perform are definitely part of the BDSM scene in the city. I bet for a lot of people this is their first engagement with the kink and fetish world. You come to a real popular club on a Saturday night, you walk around a bit, and suddenly you're watching a woman in leather gear being strapped to a cross and whipped. For some it might be a shocking diversion, but I know from experience that for some people it can awaken ideas and desires they never considered before.

Cons
  • While it's a great place to meet a lot of people who look and act like they would have a great time at sex club, Bar Sinister is not a sex club (although what might happen in some of those bathrooms might qualify on a case-by-case basis). If you are coming here - either with your partner or alone - to find a couple to swap with, you'll probably get ten no's to every yes (which is a good indication that you shouldn't bother with asking at all). This is a place where you can definitely be proud of and display your sexuality, but that doesn't mean it's full of swingers. Even Purgatory is described as 'complete submission of pure pleasure and all with your clothes on…until you get home anyways.'

Conversely, the problem I've heard from some women who have come here is that some men (and women) still think this is a sex club, and continually proposition them to head back to their place. It is one of the difficult middle ground that Bar Sinister is trying to stand on, where you want the feeling of sexual freedom and expression while partying, while not having people creepily hitting on some of the crowd.
