Paddles NYC Sex Club Review

INTRODUCTION:

When I moved to New York, I wouldn't say it was strictly because I knew it would be a much more open and tolerant place for the the kinks and fantasies that I was into, but it was certainly a big plus. The city just has this reputation for living life on the wild side, even after Times Square got all cleaned up and there's corporate sponsorships everywhere. But even after I arrived, it took me awhile to actually find a place that would indulge my BDSM side. I actually had to join an online community and meet some people to get suggestions first.

When some members there found out that i was actually pretty wet behind the ears in the world of spanking, they recommended that I go check out Paddles NYC, which is surprisingly (or maybe not-so surprisingly) located right in the heart of Manhattan. Despite the silly name, it's definitely a BDSM dungeon in there, and if you like to take a walk on the wold side, this should be a main stop.

ABOUT:

Because walking into Paddles NYC can be a rather overwhelming experience, they have a tour guide, and that's great. It's just some who works there, but if you come slightly early before an event, they can definitely show you around, and what you'll see is impressive. It looks like a themed Disneyland playground, but if the theme was sexy torture chamber. The walls are black or designed to look like medieval stones, there a huge collection of sex contraptions and furniture like wooden bondage chairs, st andrews crosses, and an entire wall full of different types of paddles and whips. And because BSM is huge into the feel and perception of humiliation and pain, this does wonders for everyone's experience.

Despite this, the events I've attend here have been a lot of fun, and not just in 'watching people writhe' sort of fun. It's only $20 to enter, so a lot of people use it as a sort of alternative hangout on a weekend night. There's no alcohol served but you can bring your own, and they have a fun little cafe in one corner with some chairs. it's a great way to take a break from some of the scenes you can take part in or out hang back and watch. When they have special events the whole place gets a lot crazier, like at one of their Bedlam parties, where it's more like a crazy dance club has descended upon the dungeon.

CONCLUSION:

If you're just getting started in the BDSM community, Paddles NYC is a wonderful first step. The staff is very friendly and enthusiastic, and it really helps that your first dungeon experience is one that is in a place that is so professionally put together. Since it's been in business for decades, you can be sure that they're doing something right, and the $20 entrance fee is more than reasonable. New York City has a lot of crazy places to go, and Paddles NYC is definitely on that list, even if you don't buy any ice cream after your spanking.

Pros
  • In terms of atmosphere, I don't know if anything can beat Paddles NYC. The place really feels like a dungeon. You almost get a bit nervous the first time you see it, before you get excited. Depending on how busy it is, you're either walking through the place almost feeling alone before you come across a piece of equipment being used by two people for a scene, and other times the place is completely packed, and it's like you're in a nightclub. Both things are really exciting to experience in a place that's themed like a torture chamber.

The Whips and Licks cafe really does feel like a 1950s style cafe shoehorned into a sex dungeon. It's very surreal. They serve ice cream, so it's extra strange (and yes, arousing) watching someone in full leather getting whipped to high heaven while you're licking a mint chocolate chip cone. It's great that it's there, though. A nice break in the action, and you can get mixers there if you brought alcohol.

And despite how intense some people can be when it comes to BDSM (and definitely the atmosphere here suggests that), the staff is very friendly and approachable, willing to tell you the basics of a lot of these fetishes. You can tell they really enjoy taking part in the community, too. They even have a surprisingly laid back dress code, although I bet it helps for people coming in for the first time who might not have spent any money on leather gear just yet.

I also just like the name of the place, and how it says 'the friendly S&M club' right on the top of their website. For an activity that involves handcuffs and whips, that sort of dry humor can really relax people a bit.

Cons
  • It is important to note, that despite the whips and chains and people walking around freely in the nude, this is not a sex club. As in, no sexual activity occurs here, meaning no intercourse or penetration, or even oral sex. The BDSM community prides itself on focusing on these alternative pathways to pleasure (usually through humiliation and pain and some other fetishes), where even climaxing is not a necessity.

Paddles NYC also has the problem where the quality of your experience can greatly depend on what's happening at the club that night. It's completely possible to go on a Friday, pay the $20, and walk inside to find it pretty much dead, with only a group of three or four people playing who clearly know each other, which could make it rather uncomfortable to suddenly join in. At the same time, you might not have wanted to come here and find the place as crammed as a busy nightclub. Checking the website for the schedule is important.

One last note, other than the rather tiny bathroom, they don't really have a place to change or clean up, if you'd prefer to do that in private.
