INTRODUCTION:

I've grown tired of using dating apps that you essentially pick out a potential partner by looking at their picture, and swiping one way or the other. I know it works for a lot of people, and that's fantastic. For me though, I need my communication to be a bit more substantial before I go out to meet someone.

A friend of mine suggested that I try out a dating forum instead of an app, and I was honestly surprised to find out that internet forums were still around, and that forum conversation wasn't done on Reddit. I found EmptyClosets.com after a bit of searching the net for "best LGBT dating forum", "LGBT dating message boards", and other variations on the theme.

I used to use message boards all the time when I was younger, so this was a very natural feeling environment to meet people to potentially date. I used to get so much action on a music message board I used to spend most of my days on when I had a desk job that didn't require me to do much other than surf the web.

So I signed up, and dusted off some of my old message board charm from days of old, in order to see what kind of sexy LGBT singles were members on Empty Closets.

The first thing that I did (even before signing up for my free membership) was take a quick look at the forum's statistics. I didn't want to sign-up for a site that only had a couple hundred members. EmptyClosets.com thankfully is a

very popular LGBT dating forum, and has well over 85 thousand members!

Very simple visually (like all great message forums are, in my humble opinion), the site is broken up into four main sections, which all have their own sub-forums, so you can focus in on precisely what it is you're looking to get out of the site.

The General Chat forums seem to be where the majority of the fun happens, in sub-forums titled Chit Chat, Fun and Games, Entertainment and Media, Technology, Gaming, Soft-& Hardware, and Current Events, World News, & LGBT News. This is where it was easiest to strike up a conversation with other members.

The Support section of the site is probably the other section that's most important to the site. It's where members can help others strategize coming out o their friends and family, discuss physical and sexual health in the community, and even support parents of LGBT people.

I was able to setup 3 dates in my first week on the forum, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to go out with at least 2 of them again. I'd say that's a pretty successful ratio for my first time using an LGBT dating forum.

-Promotes a safe space for anyone who has yet to come out to their friends and family, but need someone to talk to about it

-Over 85,000 hot and sexy members of the LGBT community who're looking to talk to other members about life in the community, but more importantly, to find hot hook-ups in their areas

-Empty Closets' Welcome Lounge is a great place for new members to introduce themselves to the community, or introduce friends who are new to the forum

-Though a large portion of the EmptyClosets.com membership is young, there is also a significant portion that is older, so the site's LGBT Later in Life sub-forum is a perfect spot for older LGBT people to meet

-If you have any issues with the site, there ae sub-forums where you can ask the staff of the site questions, or leave feedback

-A fantastic private message system allows members to send more personal messages

CONCLUSION:

If you're looking for a straight-to-the-punch dating forum, you may not love EmptyClosets.com. If you're looking for a dating experience with a little more meat on its bones (and that's not a euphemism...), then Empty Closets is a site that you need to sign-up for immediately.

It's big without being too big (again... get your mind out of the gutter), and has a membership from all over the globe, so you'll have no problem finding people to meet up with for a little action.

The site's great at keeping all of the latest posts indexed on the main page of the forum as well, so you don't have to browse through all of the forum's over a dozen sub-forums in order to catch up on what the latest and greatest posts are about.

I've spent a fairly significant amount of time on the forum at this point, and one of the other things that I really love it for, is that it gives me a place to talk about LGBT issues with other folks from the community, that isn't Facebook. So my hilarious jokes about Drag Race aren't becoming the property of that billionaire robot, Mark Zuckerberg!

Pros

I have lots of great things to say about EmptyClosets.com.
  
I joined the forum as a site where I could find dates, random hookups, and maybe a little kinky chat from time to time; I found all of those things on Empty Closets, but on top of that, I found a really tremendous online community full of seemingly mostly cool LGBT folks, who are yes, definitely there for the dating, but also for the community.
  
The community really brings back memories of old message boards that I used to frequent, only now I'm a little bit wiser, and ironically, I wasn't out in the open about my sexuality when I was on those forums. SO to find an LGBT dating forum where I can find potential much of those same experiences, but now through a much more open way, feels great.
  
The site's membership size may seem a bit unwieldy to some at first glance, but when you take into consideration how many of those members are actually going to be active at the same time as you, you'll be glad that there are so many.

I love the site's "Online Now" window, because it lets me pop onto the site quickly, see if anyone I want to cha with is online, and then pop off if not.
  
And if you're looking to find a date at night while you'r at work, you're in luck because Empty Closets is setup to look like a regular LGBT forum, so so long as you're out, your boss will just think you're catching up on the latest gay gossip.

Cons

I'm really not sure what negative things I can say about Empty Closets. All of the dates I've had so far have been between good to great, and the sex has all been fantastic. It's small sample size, but I'v never had such a high batting average on any other dating sites or apps.
  
I suppose if you're looking for a more straight-forward LGBT dating forum, the fact that Empty Closets is also a general LGBT forum with a lot of different types of conversations going on at any moment could be a bit of a negative. It did take me a little bit of browsing to get a sense of what the community wis like, and how members approach each other. The fact that the forum has such a helpful and warm membership though, it didn't take too long.
  
So if you're looking for a more direct LGBT hookup forum, you're probably not going to love all of the cool detours that EC takes you on. For me personally though, that's what makes it special. I came to the site in search of a way to meet people in a more significant and meaningful way, so it may be one of the best LGBT dating forums around considering what I want from it. I can talk to people about the latest news, memes, movies, music, etc.
  
The sub-forums where members help other members come out is wonderful as well. I wish I had something like that when I was younger.
